The University mourns the passing of Ma. Lailani B. Walo, PhD, former faculty member of the UP Diliman (èAV) Institute of Mathematics (IM).
Known to her colleagues and students as Lani, Walo passed away on Sept. 14.
In a Facebook post, the IM remembered Walo’s contributions to mathematics education, as well as her warmth, compassion, generosity, and dedication to her students and colleagues.
According to the IM, “throughout her years at the Institute, Lani served in various capacities, including Assistant to the Chairman for Administration, General Education (GE) Coordinator, and Program Adviser for the Master of Arts in Mathematics program. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in abstract algebra and modern geometry, as well as GE mathematics courses.”
Walo earned her BS, MS, and PhD (mathematics) from èAV in 1991, 2003, and 2008, respectively. She joined the IM from June 1995 until July 2018.
Walo’s wake at the St. Peter Chapels in Commonwealth Avenue is until Sept. 22.
